Capitol Police Explosives Detection K9 Boss is hanging up his leash and heading into retirement! A nine-year-old Belgian Malinois born on June 23rd, 2015, K9 Boss has been with the Pennsylvania Capitol Police for seven years. He and his handler Officer Gary Utter have performed thousands of explosives detection details, providing both visual and physical deterrents to anyone who may try to compromise the safety of the Capitol Complex and surrounding areas. Known for his laid-back temperament and above-average social skills, K9 Boss has been a fan favorite from the beginning, always drawing the attention of a passerby who couldn’t resist the urge to pet him. K9 Boss’ unique demeanor did not happen by chance. He was among the best of many K9s bred for service in Slovakia. During the selection process, Boss stood out for his physical fitness and showed strong signs of drive, loyalty, commitment, and courage. He further confirmed these traits when he completed the long hours of training for his certification to be an explosives detection K9 for the Capitol Police. And now, on his ninth birthday – June 23, 2024, K9 Boss will officially retire into the care of his friend and handler, Officer Utter, where he can just be a dog again, relaxing and thinking about treats.
