K9 Bear was a member of the Massachusetts State Police from August 2021 until June 2025. He is a five-year-old Sable German Shepard and was certified as a patrol and narcotics detection canine. K9 Bear served the Commonwealth of Massachusetts valiantly over the past few years and has located numerous parties wanted for various reasons and crimes that range from a stabbing suspect, people failing to stop for police while in possession of illegal firearms, operators that fled the scenes of crashes, people suffering from mental illness and run-away children. K9 Bear has located numerous pieces of evidence related to cases that range from firearms, knives, clothing and other burglary tools. He has assisted numerous State Police and Local Police units in conducting narcotic related search warrants and motor vehicle sniffs throughout the Commonwealth. K9 Bear has located multiple kilos of narcotics to less than a gram of narcotics in a garbage filled vehicle. Even though his career has been short, the above accomplishments demonstrate the impact he has made to the Commonwealth in his service as a patrol and narcotics canine of the Massachusetts State Police. In December 2024 K9 Bear was diagnosed with Focal Metatarsal Fistulation of the German Shepard Dog. This disease is a genetic disorder that will be managed with medication for the rest of his life. Due to unknown factors in the future and the possible negative side effects from his disorder reappearing, it was determined K9 Bear should be retired from the State Police. K9 Bear is an avid swimmer and loves to play with a ball.
