K-9 Five served the Camden County Sheriff’s Office with distinction from January 2017 until his retirement effective February 1st, 2024. Five’s regular tour of duty was in the patrol division. Five began his patrol/explosives detection training at the John Sonny Burk K9 Academy from February 2017 until August of that same year. He was a cross trained Belgian Malinois that could perform patrol functions, explosive searches, evidence recovery and tracking duties. During his tenure, Five was deployed 580 times assisting the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, local municipalities within Camden County, the surrounding counties as well as local, state and federal agencies including multijurisdictional Task Forces. He was responsible for 28 criminal arrests of offenders. He performed 418 explosive searches, 65 perimeter warrant service assists, 24 tracks, 18 building searches, 4 field searches and 23 evidence searches which resulted in locating 11 handguns which were used in serious crimes. Five also assisted members of the Sheriff’s SWAT Team. He deployed with the team during training and in tactical operations. Five also assisted the NJ State Police, Detect and Render Safe Task Force. He assisted in numerous explosive sweeps, searches throughout the state for bomb threats, pre-planned events, sporting events and Homeland Security details. He also participated in large scale major events like the Super Bowl parade in 2018, the Army Navy game in 2021, dignitary protection details with the Secret Service, concert events, and the Miss America Pageants held in Atlantic City.
